Nico is engaged to Elena’s sister, but the tension between the two of them is undeniable. This is at its very basic the story of two people who are so drawn to each other, but don’t understand the whys, and don’t want it to be more than surface attraction. Sure their romance is forbidden, but it’s the god dang mafia... rules are meant to be broken just like legs. And thus ensues a tense as all get out, semi-slow burn. However the real question is... is this a tragedy or a happily ever after?

The thing about this story is that it is more than just a forbidden love story. It’s filled up with messed up happenings and even more messed up characters. Of course they are messed up in an endearing/quirky way, that makes you want to know even more about ALL of them (please give me more! Gianna, Benito, Christian. MORE!)

All I know is. This book is good. The writing is good. It’s steamy. It is even a bit funny. I will admit at some points I shed a few emo tears. It is LONG, and usually long books bore the crap out of me, but this one kept giving me JUST enough, to pull back, and keep me craving what would be next. THIS is how you write a long book. Not adding a bunch of uninteresting filler. You fill it with characters that reel you in, and scenes that are entertaining and unexpected even if they aren’t about the main characters.

If you like mafia romance that isn’t just smut (I love “just smut” too btw) and actually takes you a bit past the shallow waters of the fictional mob, while still giving you a steamy slow burn. Then you NEED to check out this book.

The Sweetest Oblivion Made Volume 1 Danielle Lori 9781721284443 Books Reviews

Wow! Just, wow! This book was all kinds of amazing!

Six months ago Elena’s actions had catastrophic consequences. As a result, she now must bear witness to her sister’s arranged wedding to the Russo, the head of the mafia. Nicolas Russo is a cold, cruel man and she shouldn’t be glad that it’s not her that is promised to him.

Nico didn’t care which daughter he married. This was a business deal and there were no emotions involved. Unfortunately, he can’t hold to that because he definitely feels something when he sees his bride’s sister for the first time.

This was such an intense read. Each page is laced with deep emotion and angst as Nico and Elena struggle against the feelings that arise when they are together.

Nico is the perfect jealous possessive anti-hero that finds himself going crazy when confronted by the mere thought of Elena. Man, I love a hero that can’t help but give in to the drive to claim and protect the heroine.

Elena has always been the sweet one. She lives behind fake smiles when all she wants is to be free, to be herself, to live her life. I enjoyed watching her come out from behind her façade as she spewed her opinions to Nico. Despite the threat that he could end her at any point and time, she just couldn’t help but show him the real her.

Together, this couple were like a ticking time bomb. As things between them escalate to cataclysmic proportions, I waited anxiously and with great anticipation for it all to explode. The tension in the story, within each character, as well as between Nico and Elena just continued to grow. With small reprieves of some wit and humor, Ms. Lori eases the pressure before building it back up again more so than before.

This is a very well written story with some amazing chemistry between the hero and heroine. There were some parts that felt a bit slow and repetitive during the heroine’s internal musings but nothing I wanted to skim. The secondary characters were perfect to either push the story forward, support the main characters, or add a bit of levity. I would absolutely love to see some of them get their own book.

Overall, if you love mafia romances or intense alpha anti-heroes who flounder a bit due to what their experiencing, you’re definitely going to want to check this one out!
I did a lot of grumbling through out this book and maybe I should have given this 4 stars but ultimately the ending completely won me over. It's one of those stories that you fight so hard to get to that happy ending that you forget all about the struggle before.

Nico is one of the hottest anti-heroes I've read. He was obsessed, possessed and completely consumed the heroine without claiming her for far too long. I think he is the best part about this book and yet I wanted to shake him. For all his warning of assumptions, he assumed too much.

I felt for Elena in this book but I always hate the position women endure being in a mob family. She did the best she could for the restrictions she faced. I wanted her to play harder to get and yet I wanted her to stop safe guarding her heart. Contradictory, I know.

This is a very slow burn and I'll admit I do like things to progress a bit faster. There were some very interesting side characters that I would have liked more from but maybe there will be future books about them.
I have been reading a lot of new to me authors, and I'm fascinated with all the ah-mazing books I have found out there. The Sweetest Oblivion was my first Danielle Lori's book, and you need to know it won't be my last. I got so lost in Nico & Elena's story, that stop reading was not an option. The writing, the angst, the intensity, the struggle, the love, the hate, all the feelings rolled into a sinfully package. From the very first word to the very last, this book was addictive as heck.

A darkish mafia romance.
Not your typical arranged married.
An anti-hero that had me dizzy from lust.
A not perfect, but lovable heroine.
Steamy scenes that had me in a constant state of arousal.
And second characters that have me not so patiently waiting for the rest of the books in the series.

Danielle Lori had me staying up all hours of the night and sacrificing sleep. She gave me everything I want in a book and then some! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys their mafia romances with lots of sexual tension. The Sweetest Oblivion is easily now one of my favorites Mafia Romances.
