I loved this book. The writing style was wonderful. Loved the humor. We got to know both the main characters and how their feelings progressed. The little nuances of body language that were detailed impressed me. People communicate so much without ever speaking and I like it when authors pick up on those cues and facial expressions that make the story more intimate. I loved the few intimate moments that were done without too much detail but enough to understand how important it is to any romance. I will read this again

This is my first book by Carla Kelly, and I will definitely read more. The story is fresh, the characters very appealing, and the very small amount of explicit sex fits my taste. I very much liked that the protagonists were not titled dukes, etc. There is no mayhem, and no overpowering evil, but there is enough suspense about how things will turn out to keep the reader interested.
Really enjoying Carla Kelly's books. The character development is very thorough, and there's none of the nonsense that can sometimes characterize romantic plots. You quickly come to care for and/or admire the main characters. The one thing this particular story lacked was a more thorough ending; it was a bit truncated in the resolution of the misunderstanding and reuniting of the main characters. Even so, it was an enjoyable read, and consistent with the quality of Carla's other novels. She's a keeper, and worthy of her own "collection" on my !
I would give this ten stars if I could. it is such a sweet love story about two people who need each other, agree to marry as a convenience to them both and then fall in love. Admiral Bright and Sally/Sophie are characters that will stay with me a long time. He is honorable, kind, and generous. All any woman could possibly ask for in a husband. Sally/Sophie has had a horrible five years. I could feel her pain and her hunger. These two deserve each other and never have I cheered more for a couple. Well done Ms. Kelly!
Deeply moving love story with great writing from an extremely talented author. I hated to have the story end. The authentic historical dimension adds color and depth. The characters are well drawn. The plight of the lower classes during and after the British wars is heartbreaking. It's amazing that Britain survived her class structure and enemies. Kelly always brings her characters to life and her historical perspective is amazing. This is one of her best works. Wonderful.

Carla Kelly's artistry with the pen is simply staggering.. The nuances, subtlety, power, and sensitivity expressed in this novel are extremely compelling

The beautifully unfolding love story of two ordinary, unlikely people is exquisite. There are no rakes and debutantes here. These are real people. The secondary characters are drawn in satisfying detail. The inclusion of characters of Central-European Jewish origin was deftly and subtly written.

And I was particularly struck by Ms. Kelly's keen understanding of the deep sense of responsibility all dedicated members of the military feel for those in their commands; the profound outrage and hatred they will feel for any who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of those serving their country; their disillusionment should they encounter cynical, morally corrupt cabinet ministers.

This is probably the best.....no, I've already said that about other novels written by Ms. Kelly. So. This is ONE of the very best I've ever read.

Btw, to the 1 & 2star folks who had a hissy over the paperweight. Read the book. He did NOT throw the darn thing AT her. He threw it at the WALL. It hit the WALL. She was scared. He was furious...with very good reason.

And yes, there are a few love scenes (they're married) and the scenes are portrayed beautifully.

I can always count on Carla Kelly to write a book with great characters. Sally and Charles are two broken people who come together through unusual circumstances. Both are trying to help out the other without realizing how much they need each other.

This book is well written and hard to put down. The romance takes time. They grow to respect each other before they realize they are in love. I also liked that the romance was between two people who were older than the usual romance. Sally was in her 30's and Charles in his 40's. They both had experienced hard things and were able to compliment each other and have empathy for their heartbreaks.

There is a dilemma in the book. Sally hasn't been completely honest with Charles about her past. At first it doesn't seem like a big deal, until outsiders become involved. The resolution is perfect.

I usually read Carla Kelly's newer books because she writes cleaner romances now. This is one of the older books and does contain a few sex scenes
I have read many of Kelly's books and this one did not disappoint. This is a perfect representation of the genre, I laughed and cried and was hugely entertained. The book centers around the H and h's marriage of convenience, or desperation rather, and how it evolves to genuine love. Clearly not an original theme and yet I found their story very moving. He is a retired admiral and she is an out of work companion. I was hooked from the get go and did not let go until the very end.
Both characters are well developed and I liked that their love for each other was not instantaneous or lust driven, it began with admiration and respect first. I also liked that the H and h were not so very young, which goes to show that when love’s involved, silliness comes at any age. There is humor, drama, and some heated scenes. There were some elements that seemed implausible to me, like the continued (and accepted) insubordination and impudence of the admiral’s right-hand man, but overall it was a believable story. Would have liked the ending to have been less rushed, too abrupt for my liking.
