Victoria Speedwell is a sharp lepidopterist who is back again to solve a new mystery with her natural historian/taxidermist buddy, Stoker. When Victoria is invited to a woman’s club that is like men’s clubs of the Victorian era in 1887, a place where women’s intelligence and interest in just about anything are allowed to shine and be shared. Victoria meets a formidable member, Lady Sundridge, who brings Victoria into a quiet room where she is scrutinized and queried by another woman. Victoria takes very little time to figure out that she is being addressed by a member of royalty. Now Lady Sundridge had already begged Victoria to assist in solving the mystery of the murder of a woman named Artemesia, the lover of a famous society art patron, Miles Ramsforth who is to be hanged for the murder in only two days. Not too much pressure! Add to the fact that Victoria she will meet her own father if she succeeds. Both sides of this quest have very different, unknown motives in resolving these mysteries with success!Stoker and Victoria discover the more sordid side of royalty in a secret sex society and other mysterious places and people. As usual, Victoria receives a secret communication that threatens her life is he insists on continuing her investigation of the circumstances surrounding Artemisia’s death.
No spoiler’s here – we soon discover there are plenty of suspects who might have committed the murder. We also meet several high society and royal personages who are a part of the decadence so characteristic of this historical time. Add to that the mystery behind Victoria and Stoker’s relationship which seems slightly hot, growing hotter but never actually getting there, a frustrating conundrum for readers!
A Perilous Undertaking is a satisfying read that starts off slowly but gradually picks up momentum with plenty of twists and turns all the way to the surprising final page! Nicely done, Deanna Raybourn!

A Perilous Undertaking A Veronica Speedwell Mystery Deanna Raybourn 9780451476159 Books Reviews
I had the first book in this series, A Curious Beginning recommended to me by a friend and while it is not something I would normally read, I ended up devouring it quite quickly. I was therefore thrilled to get my hands on the sequel to see what Veronica and Stoker were going to be up to next.
One of the reasons I love Veronica so much is that she says what she thinks no matter the consequences and she is just funny. I never thought I would laugh out loud as much as I do in this series, but I am constantly laughing. Part of that was also due to Lady Wellie, who Veronica meets in this book and is just as funny as Veronica. She and Veronica are both very direct and are not afraid to speak their minds, which I admired about both of them. Her first meeting with Veronica over dinner was a hysterical conversation that was by no means polite for the time period, but I thoroughly relished every second of it.
In A Perilous Undertaking, Veronica and Stoker are tasked with trying to prove a man innocent of murdering his mistress. Veronica is hesitant to take the job, but the royal family who have never claimed her, practically dare her to prove this man’s innocence. Veronica plans on doing exactly that if only to prove to the royals that she can. She and Stoker are not officially on the case and there are many that want to see them fail, therefore there are many challenges and obstacles thrown their way as the novel progresses. One of the aspects of this book that has ensnared me is the respect that Veronica and Stoker have for one another. No matter what may happen, and no matter how they bicker with one another, Veronica and Stoker genuinely admire and have high esteem for one another and always have each other’s backs. While there is definitely some romantic tension between these two, they have a pretty solid friendship to build more upon which I am sure will continue to be explored in the future.
While I very much enjoy the relationship between Veronica and Stoker, I also enjoyed the mystery of this novel. I really had no idea who the killer was. Was it the man that was accused of it, or was there more devious work behind the scenes? Looking back, I see the clues that were dropped throughout, but I enjoyed trying to guess at who was genuine in this book and who was trying to let another man hang for their crimes.
I am sure this is not the last we have seen of Veronica and Stoker and I am eager to see what adventure they will go on next and if they will finally admit that they actually care quite deeply for one another. Whenever the next adventure is released, I will be anxiously awaiting my copy of the book to go on more adventures with them. Until then, excelsior!
when i say the plot is a little (or a lot) thin - i mean that as a huge compliment. if you are reading this book, you are not reading it because you are desperate to unravel the mystery of who killed the paramour of a man we never even meet on the page. you are reading it because you want to spend time with veronica and stoker, to go on this adventure with them and revel in their charming and somewhat strange domestic routines, to suffer the slow burn of their exquisitely well-portrayed partnership and to understand where the revelations of "a curious beginning" will take veronica and where the revelations of "a perilous undertaking" will take stoker, and how they will answer those questions of character together.
ms. raybourn has done what i so often wish writers would do - and that is put in just enough plot to give the story an engine and a purpose and not a jot more. i mean this, again, as an accolade, because i have lost count of how many times i have read a book centered around a great relationship (platonic or otherwise) and suffered through the feeling of, "oh, man, i wish we could just hang out with these people and not have to care whodunnit to get to the 2 pages of character interaction that will make it worthwhile". for those who prefer a more balanced approach, this book will not exactly disappoint but it definitely won't thrill.
